A: The AvoDerm Natural Lamb Meal & Brown Rice Adult Dog Formula (26 lb. bags only) has been recalled due to possible Salmonella contamination of a singular, isolated manufacturing batch.
We have asked our distribution customers to return this product to us immediately. No other AvoDerm products have tested positive for Salmonella or are affected by this recall.
Until we have completed testing and have the assurance that all products are free of contamination, we will hold all AvoDerm or Breeder’s Choice products at the manufacturing facility and distribution sites.
The product affected by this recall is identified below and has the following “Best Before” dates:

Q: Why are you doing a recall?
A: A recall is required by the Food and Drug Administration as this issue involved the presence of Salmonella.
Q: Are any other products indicating the presence of Salmonella?
A: The presence of Salmonella contamination has not been found during our ongoing product testing program for the AvoDerm and Breeder’s Choice lines.
Q: What is Salmonella?
A: Salmonella are gram-negative, rod-shaped bacteria that are the most frequently reported cause of food borne illness.
Q: How are pets infected with Salmonella?
A: Animals can become infected with Salmonella by ingesting the bacteria. Infections in animals are most commonly obtained by consumption of feces from an infected animal. Although rare, Salmonella can get into and persist in pet foods and affect animals eating these contaminated products.
Q: Is there any risk to people?
A: There is a risk to humans from handling contaminated pet products, especially if they have not thoroughly washed their hands after having contact with the products or any surfaces exposed to these products. Always be sure to wash your hands after feeding, playing, petting, etc. and be careful to not step in their your animal’s feces.
Q: What are the symptoms of Salmonella infection?
A: Healthy people infected with Salmonella should monitor themselves for some or all of the following symptoms: nausea, vomiting, diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, abdominal cramping and fever. Rarely, Salmonella can result in more serious ailments, including arterial infections, endocarditis, arthritis, muscle pain, eye irritation, and urinary tract symptoms. Consumers exhibiting these signs after having contact with this product should contact their healthcare providers.
Q: What are the symptoms or how can I tell if my pet’s been exposed to Salmonella?
A: Pets with Salmonella infections may be lethargic and have diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, fever, and vomiting. Some pets will have only decreased appetite, fever and abdominal pain. Infected but otherwise healthy pets can be carriers and infect other animals or humans. If your pet has consumed the recalled product and has these symptoms, please contact your veterinarian.
Q: If my pet ate some of the recalled feed, how soon would I see any symptoms?
A: It’s difficult to say for sure, but the incubation period – the time between ingestion of Salmonella bacteria and the onset of illness – varies from six to 72 hours (Mayo Clinic, 2007, April 12; MMWR Recomm Rep, 2001).
Q: What quality assurance/control procedures are in place to prevent this?
A: Breeder’s Choice Pet Foods tests the product prior to using them in any feed or consumable product.
Q: If no animals are sick why do they have to recall the products?
A: FDA policy indicates that a recall is necessary and, in an abundance of caution, Breeder’s Choice feels that recalling the product is the most proactive way to proceed in the best interests of pets and pet parents.

A: Even though no other products manufactured at the same time and place as the AvoDerm Natural Lamb Meal & Brown Rice Adult Dog Formula in 26 lb. bags have shown the presence of Salmonella, we have decided to hold shipments until our evaluation is complete. Hopefully, testing will be finished in the shortest amount of time and we will begin shipping again soon afterwards.
